A family of four is sitting in a field north of Pittsburgh and laughing during a family photo session.

Next up on my location series is North Park. North Park is so expansive and there are so many great areas within the park for family photos, but in this blog I'm going to focus on North Field in North Park.

Your session location is one of the main aspects that has a major impact on the feel of your photos. For example, photos a field are going to have a very different feel than in an urban area. As a family photographer in the Pittsburgh area, part of my job is to find the best locations for my clients. If you want your family session outside and to be in an open field with an amazing sunset, this location is for you. This blog is all about North Field in North Park, which is only about 25 minutes north of Pittsburgh.

Why North Park is a Perfect Location for your Family Photos

If you are in the Pittsburgh area and looking for a great location for your family photos, look no further than this field in North Park! This field is the first location I really fell in love with when I started my photography business. I took so many families to this location. I knew as soon as I started exploring North Field all those years ago that it would be absolutely perfect for family photos. When you drive up to the parking lot, it is very unassuming and doesn't look like much, but after a short two-minute walk, the trees open up to a beautiful field. It's one of my go-to spots north of Pittsburgh, PA if my clients are looking for a field. The sun sets just beyond the tree line in the West, which makes for insanely beautiful photos. It's even gorgeous when it's cloudy. Your kiddos will have fun running through the field and along the paths. One thing to consider if you do use this location is that since it is an open field, it would be a good idea for the session to take place during golden hour, which is either just after sunrise or just before sunset. Otherwise, the lighting may be too harsh.

There is nothing more gorgeous than a late summer or fall family session during golden hour at North Field. The sun sets just over the tree line and makes for some very magical photos.

How to Prepare for Your Family Session at North Park

My sessions are super relaxed. I don't expect you or your kids to stand still or behave the whole time. We focus on interaction. I guide you through the whole session, tell you what to do, and if your kids are running around and not cooperating, I promise you, you will receive beautiful photos that tell the story of your family exactly how it is. With that being said, you don't need much to prepare for your family photos at North Park. It’s a good idea to do a tick check on your kids after your session at North Park because of the long grass.

After you book your session, I send you a link to the private client area on my website that gives you wardrobe advice, location advice if we haven't picked the location yet, and every little detail you would need to feel prepared going into your session. And if you have additional questions, I am always available to contact through email.

But truly, you just need to get dressed and be yourself at the session. I will take care of everything else.

Worried your kids won't cooperate? Don't be. I'm very experienced in the chaos that comes with kids.

Some of my favorite images come from the in-between moments - the giggles, cuddles, and personalities that emerge when children are simply allowed to be themselves. My sessions are designed to be relaxed, playful, and low-pressure for everyone involved.
