Welcoming a new baby into the world is a moment filled with joy, love, and countless memories waiting to be made. Capturing these early days through photography offers families a way to hold onto the magic of those first moments. My recent newborn photography session is the perfect example of the real, magical moments that are captured when you book a newborn session with me. As a newborn photographer in Pittsburgh, the fact that I get to capture beautiful moments is one of the best parts of my job. This post shares the highlights from that session, offering insights into how I create meaningful images that families will look back on for years to come.

Preparing for the Newborn Session

A successful newborn photography session starts long before the camera comes out. Preparation is key to ensuring the baby is comfortable and the environment is safe and soothing. For this session, we focused on creating a calm atmosphere with natural lighting and lots of cuddles to keep the baby relaxed.

Creating a Comfortable Environment

Newborn sessions are done in your home, which inherently makes you newborn session more comfortable than in a studio or somewhere outside. You are in your own environment, so it's easier to keep it comfortable. In general, I recommend that you keep the room at a comfortable warmth to help the baby stay sleepy and content.

We also used natural light from a nearby window to create a soft, flattering glow. This approach avoids harsh shadows and highlights the baby’s skin tone and tiny details like eyelashes and fingers.

Capturing Natural Poses and Expressions

One of the best parts of newborn photography is capturing those fleeting moments of peaceful sleep, gentle yawns, and tiny movements. During newborn sessions, I always focus on natural poses that feel organic and comfortable for the baby.

Incorporating Family Connections

Newborn photography is not just about the baby; it’s also about the connections with family members. If this is your first child, the session will include your newborn along with you and you partner. If this is not your first child, siblings will also be included! During this newborn session, I captured sweet moments with the newborn and his parents, highlighting the bond and love that surrounds the new arrival.

Using Props

If you've looked through my newborn photos, you know that I rarely use props. That's intentional, because during a newborn session with me, the focus is your newborn baby, rather than uncomfortable poses or various distracting props. With that being said, if you have a special blanket, stuffy, or other personal item you'd like to incorporate, I would gladly capture that for you!

Editing and Final Touches

After the session, the editing process is where the images come to life. I aim to keep the photos natural and true to the moment, enhancing colors and light subtly to maintain the warmth and softness of the scene.

I avoid heavy filters or over-editing, focusing instead on clarity and gentle contrast to bring out the baby’s features. The goal is to create images that feel timeless and can be treasured for years.

Tips for Parents Preparing for a Newborn Session

For parents planning their own newborn photography, here are some practical tips:

  • Schedule the session within the first two weeks after birth when babies tend to sleep more deeply.

  • Keep the baby well-fed and comfortable before the session to encourage peaceful sleep. Babies are also usually fed during the session. We take as many breaks that's needed.

  • Choose simple, neutral clothing or wraps to keep the focus on the baby.

  • Communicate any special requests or ideas with your photographer ahead of time.

  • Be patient and flexible; newborn sessions can take time as the baby’s needs come first.
