So you've booked a family session, but now you have to find outfits for the whole family. I don't know about you, but that may be the most stressful part of getting pictures taken! Deciding what to wear to your photoshoot can be overwhelming, but you don't need to stress because I'm here to help you. In this post I'll give you a few tips that will make your life easier. Every time you choose to have professional photos taken, you are making an incredible investment. As with any other investment, you want the finished product to look and feel amazing. Read below for some additional tips on what to wear to your family photo session:
Be Yourself!
This is probably the most important tip. These photographs are for you and your family - not for anyone else. So if you love dressing up in formal wear - wear that. If your family is more casual, wear casual clothes. The images you receive will likely be on the walls of your house for years, so keep that in mind when you choose your wardrobe.
Don't Match Colors - Coordinate
Think coordinating colors - not matching. The days of matching outfits and everyone wearing the same color are gone! Let everyone's personality show by choosing a color palette instead of one color. Why is sticking to a color palette so important? A color palette ties everyone's outfits together to make your images look amazing. Don't know where to start with coordinating colors or picking a color palette? Google! If you Google "rose color palette ideas" you will have tons of options to choose from. Pick something you like - And if you still need some help or even just want another opinion, PLEASE reach out!! I'm here for you.
Start with Mom's Outfit
Seriously! Have mom pick out her clothes first, it can have a pattern or you can add in some layers... And then pick everyone else's outfits based off of how they compliment mom's clothes.
Get Help with Visual Aids
I'm a visual learner, and always appreciate examples. It's just so much easier for me when I see clothing actually in front of me online. I get so many more ideas. Pinterest is great for this! I always provide a Pinterest board for wardrobe inspiration for my clients so that they have help visualizing cohesive wardrobe ideas.
What to Avoid
Avoid neon colors, anything with a large logo, and baseball caps. Large logos and neon colors are a distraction - they take away from your photos because your eye will automatically be drawn to the neon colors or logo.
Add Layers and Texture
Don't be afraid to add in different textures to your wardrobe, like tweed or corduroy. Layers are also a great option. Add in a jacket, a cardigan, a scarf. All of these things will add interest to your wardrobe.
Comfort is King
If you are uncomfortable in the clothes you choose for your photo session, it will likely show in your face, body language, and ultimately your pictures - so it's a good idea to try on the clothes before your session to make sure you are comfortable in them - and this goes for the whole family! We are active in my family sessions, so clothes that aren't restrictive are a great idea for your session.
